Ephesians 1:17-21, The Message
15-19 That’s why, when I heard of the solid trust you have in the Master
Jesus and your outpouring of love to all the followers of Jesus, I couldn’t
stop thanking God for you—every time I prayed, I’d think of you and give
thanks. But I do more than thank. I ask—ask the God of our Master, Jesus
Christ, the God of glory—to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him
personally, your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is
he is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he
has for his followers, oh, the utter extravagance of his work in us who trust
him—endless energy, boundless strength! All this energy issues from Christ: God
raised him from death and set him on a throne in deep heaven, in charge of
running the universe, everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no
power exempt from his rule. And not just for the time being, but forever.
He is in charge of it all, has the final word on everything.
A reflection on this passage below:
May the God of light
gift you with wisdom-
not from books
but the kind that allows you
to know God deeply
and understand his ways.
May the eyes of your heart
become beacons,
not blurred by fear or shame
but clear and focused.
So you can see—
see what He’s calling you to do,
see what He sees in you.
see the treasure
He has in all of us.
Because this—
this inheritance He has given us
is extravagant.
We belong to Him.
And He gives us access to his
boundless strength,
pulsing through us,
And we are reminded that
He’s in charge of all
that we see and don’t see.
But it's okay—
it's okay if we don’t understand.
It's okay if we can't yet name the calling.
Because we’ve got blurred vision,
we’re still squinting through the dark.
But even in the dark,
we ask—
God, shine your light.
Shine it bright.
We need a renewed
imagination.
To see the divine thumbprint
in ourselves
and in each other.
Because we’re all made
in Your image.
And as Teresa of Avila said,
You're in all of us—
waiting to be found.
So God,
open our eyes.
Open our hearts.
Lead us on this treasure hunt
that is all around us—
this life of sacred surprises
and holy invitations.
