Mama Monday #68

A Prayer Inspired by a Small Moment in the Story
There are moments that seem very small,
so small you might miss them:
a door held open, a meal dropped off,
a birthday remembered, a song lyric in the evening,
a seeming aside in the midst of a gospel story.

And yet those can be the moments
which somehow end up telling us
something
big
important
true
about ourselves or about a relationship
about an institution or about a family,
or even about God.

It runs counter to a world accustomed to
worshipping big and bombastic and demonstrative to
take a moment for what is small in the story but
you know better, you always have.
Small can be vital,
small can be life-giving.
Small can be the unexpectedly important brick left in the wall,
holding back the darkness and the howl.

Don't overlook the small moments
when God comes to call.
Don't miss the asides and the glances
and the sentences and the pauses that remind you,
God is humming a song of very particular love to you.
